If you think of the big name comfy shoe brands, they don’t exactly scream ‘street’ or ‘cool’, but choosing comfortable shoes doesn’t always mean you have to compromise on style.
Street Style
The modern sneaker is a perennial option for effortless cool, think brands like Vans or Adidas which are very much ‘a la mode’ currently. The original Converse casual style trainer, the Chuck Taylor All Star, first made its mark on the stylish footwear scene in the early 20th Century.
Designed initially to be marketed for basketball, the All Stars quickly became a fashion icon, but at a cost. That cost being comfort. Rocking a pair of Converse was a style statement but one that made your feet sore at the end of the day.
Other major brands’ designs also caught on quickly in the 80’s and 90’s, but despite being perfect for kickflipping your skateboard, they weren’t made for pounding the tarmac for a days sightseeing. On the other end of the footwear spectrum, we find wool footwear, focused primarily on comfort. Wool-lined shoes are not a new thing, with brands like the Australian Uggs making waves since the 60’s and 70’s. Despite being comfortable footwear, the wool boot was never really designed for style wear or harsh weather, with many a pair of Uggs ruined in the rain.
The Russian designed ‘valenkis’, which are thick woollen shoes designed for harsh winters, are a proven, traditional choice when it comes to ice and snow. Considering these were born in Siberia and the Arctic circle, you’re more assured of dry, comfortable feet at the end of a day treading wintery streets. But again, style is compromised by comfort and function.
